Window of Inspiration

I can’t watch you run around
Looking for a reason to lose yourself,
Counting each hollow bird bone in your wrists –
And more.

Letting this feeling
Slip between the cracks of your smile,
(carefully constructed, dissolved with a single tear)
Tying itself in knots around your ribcage –
(bleached branches, out of place in a winter landscape)
Drawing it
Tightly
Shut.


All the tears you’ve swallowed, the hits
Shaking the thin line of your lips
Stealing away each oxygen molecule
From the back of your lungs.

I will teach you how to breathe again.

I want to stop your spine folding in on itself –
Draw your desert eyes away from that hazy shimmer;
The mirage of your reflection
On steel.



Cheek to cheek, trembling in silence –
Staring into each other’s hands,
Trying to find answers
In the gentle curves of tendons and arteries;
Galaxies of human hurt, of things unsaid –
Of things to be fixed.

Three hours ‘til sunrise –
Your fingers are still cold.
